Communication Transport Protocol Strategies for Rail Applications

Current technologies for managing rail traffic such as the Global System Mobile communications Railway (GSM-R) will be no longer available within upcoming years. The European Shift2Rail Joint Undertaking (S2R-JU) proposed Adaptable Communication (ACS) to overcome this problem. In work, we model ACS by abstracting it at Internet Protocol (IP) level, using tunnels datagrams’ transmission a communication bearer is along rail. Then, evaluate its performance, an emulator has been implemented. core part of Tunnel Manager which can establish pseudo-virtual circuits through multi-bearer tunnels, forcing datagrams on service-basis follow specific paths between gateways (i.e., from on-board train network-side control center and vice versa). properly select given tunnel/bearer sending messages (and duplicating them redundant paths) critical applications management, relying based either connection-oriented protocol Transport Control Protocol, TCP), connectionless User Datagram UDP) or mix them. paper, investigate best solutions in terms transport protocols implementing bearers. Results are two main use cases: i. position report/movement authority Rail Traffic Management (ERMTS) ii. file transmission, considering TCP UDP tunnel protocol. For first application, one selected only if end-to-end channel delay lower than 100 ms experienced packet loss 4% whole crossed network. Two bearers, mixed UDP/TCP bearers should case greater 300 15%. Considering transfer scenario, with have throughput 50 Mbit/s even 1%.
